 Post subject: Pauper Burials

I have a few ancestors who in the 19th century were buried in public graves at Burnley Cemetery and it got me wondering if someone couldn't afford to pay for their loved ones to be buried who would they have to approach to arrange the funeral and would the funeral be just the basics of a coffin, transport to the cemetery and a Minister to perform the burial rites?

I have often wondered the same. I assume they told the Dr when the deceased was pronounced but I don't really know.

I have some in Burnley Cemetery in the 1800/1900's and have often wondered who arranged and paid. I would have thought the council and the basics but I am not sure at all.

According to wiki answers, the body would have been placed in a sack inside a coffin and given a religious ceremony. The coffin would be opened body in sack removed and buried later with other unfortunates and the coffin reused.

Oh dear, not good to think of your ancestors like that. A member of my family used to joke about leaving him out for the binman.
