Do any members of this forum remember these young citizens of Lanehead and Briercliffe ?
Better still, are any of you these young citizens?

I also have some scanned photos of Miss Wake's class (she married to become Mrs Meldrum) and Jack Stuttard's class in 1963/64 that I can post later.

Steve

Your very welcome Mel.

By the way, I'm the little fellow in the middle row, second from the right. I can recall the names of all but two of the children, many of whom were and still are my friends, but to my shame I can't remember the name of the teacher, a certain Miss X. This was my first class at Lanehead in 1957/58 and the teacher moved to another school after my first year. If anybody knows her name I'd be grateful. The following year most of us were then taught by Miss Wake, who later became Mrs Meldrum.

Other teachers at Lanehead at that time were Mrs Marsden (a more elderly woman) and then Jack Stuttard, who spent the rest of his career at Lanehead, much of it as headmaster. The headmaster during my Lanehead years was Ken Happer.

Best wishes
Steve

I wonder if her name is given in the book that Jack Stuttard wrote about Lanehead school?

I don't remember the class in that photo but I do remember the names of many teachers.

Mr Ken Happer - Headmaster
Miss Wood
Mrs Tate - husband was a steeplejack!
Miss Whittaker
Mr Brear - arrived when the school was temporarily housed at St Cuthbert's while renovation/decoration was in progress at Lane Head. Known in my household for pronouncing Canada as Canidda! Strange what you remember . . .

I think I have a photo of my class somewhere. I'll try to find it.

I do remember a lot of names from my own class:
Ronnie Duerden
Alan Bradfield
Merle Wilkinson
Anita Scott
Jeffery Riley
Geoffrey Butterfield
Christine Gorton
John Haynes
Margaret Read
and probably others eventually!

I am on the photo with Mr Brear at St Cuthberts. I remember Mr Happer, I remembering him carrying me in the school yard when I had fallen and split my chin open, still got the scar. I got taken to the doctors and had it stitched with nothing to numb it -- ouch.

I managed to find two Lanehead School photographs - see attached.

My efforts at naming the pupils:

these are great! I didn't go to school here...I was a visitor to Harle Syke from Manchester on school holidays! But I did always chum with Merle Wilkinson. She did marry Jack Stuttard. I have tried to contact her a number of times in vain. Last time I saw her and Jack we were showing off our respective children on one of my visits from Canada in the 70's. They were still living at the same house on Briercliffe Road below the school.
She would have known me as Susan Halstead. We were friends right into our teens......shame how one lets good relationships drift away!!

I just read through this thread again and realised I never followed up on my promise to check the book.
The answer is, sorry, there's nothing at all in the book that helps.
