Attendance At Spiritualist Meeting Causes Trouble

At the Burnley County Police Court, on Monday, a weaver named John Stuttard, living in Talbot-street, Harle Syke, was summoned by his wife, Sarah Ann Stuttard, who resides with her son in School-alley, Haggate, for deserting her. -Mr. Mossop appeared for complainant, whose story was that she was married to defendant in 1892 at the registry office. Both had been married previously, and both had children. On October 22, after some reference to a flower which he had taken home for the purpose of wearing it the next day, he said it it "was not good enough that he and his children should have to work for her and her children." Following on that he struck her half a dozen times with a wet cloth, put it over her face, and whilst her daughter was in search of a policeman he picked up a chair and threw it at her, making a lump on the side of the head, afterwards banging her head against the side of the door. Then he got hold of her by the shoulders, opened the door, and pushed her out, locking the door upon her. -In answer to Mr. Procter (Messrs. Procter and Son), who represented defendant, Mrs. Stuttard denied she had been in the habit of attending Spiritualist meetings three times a week, but admitted going there occasionally, saying she did so to get out of the way of her husband. -Mr Procter: Will you give up this Spiritualism? -Mrs. Stuttard: I have given it up. -That being the only bother between you, are you willing to go back? Mrs. Stuttard: I dare not. My life would hardly be worth anything after this. -A daughter who gave evidence believed her parents would be happy did her step-mother cease to go to Spiritualist meetings. -Mr. Procter appealed to the Bench to act as peace-makers. The only allegation defendant had to make against his wife was her visiting of Spiritualist meetings. She went on a Sunday, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and that notwithstanding his remonstrances. Her going to Spiritualists' meetings was the only reason for quarrelling, and it was probably in a fit of temper that he locked the door upon her. He did not intend it to be a permanent separation. He suggested that the parties should be allowed several weeks with a view to getting together again, in the meantime complainant to abandon going to Spiritualist meetings. -Defendant corroborated Mr. Procter's statement, and said that consequent on his wife being at Spiritualist meetings he had had to put the children to bed. He denied striking his wife with a wet cloth. -The bench granted a separation order, and ordered defendant to pay 17s. per week to his wife.
