I would be very surprised if the unknown church in the painting is St Bartholomew's Colne. Colne Parish Church is much longer (having been substantially rebuilt in the 19th century). The painting post-dates this rebuilding.

It might be worth looking at the artist's family history records to see where his relatives were baptised and married. It is possible that church in the painting is or was outside the immediate area - and for that reason is unfamiliar.

I have since googled Charles Simpson. It seems he travelled the country. In my email to Louise, I asked if he was a relation. Her response was
I have no idea who Charles Simpson was, but he does seem to have painted quite a lot of paintings for our family! The story goes that he travelled around the countryside painting and would give you a picture if you cooked him a meal.

I couldn't resist trying to track down the 'unknown church' and am now pretty confident I have found it:

Church of St Mary, Newchurch in Pendle.

Not sure if I can manage to upload a copy of the photo - but will try [Succeeded}. I found it on a Flickr page by googling
newchurch pendle church images. The relevant photo came up as the 1st one on line 3.

Well done. I have spent the last hour trying to find it----am I sad or what??? I was more inclined to head over towards Yorkshire, the nearest I got to Newchurch was Fence.

Thats great Ruth, thats definitely the church! The church painting and the Spenser House painting are smaller than the others and have always been a pair, so I imagined the church would have been somewhere closer by. I always assumed Charles Simpson was relatively local, but it seems he did travel all over the country. 68 Halifax Road is where my great grandad Thomas Edmondson grew up and lived until he moved to Walverden Road with his wife Priscilla. Priscilla (Robertshaw) grew up at Burwains, so I guess they commissioned paintings of their childhood homes.
