This mural shows people and buildings of old Burnley. Some of them are quite obvious others not quite so. Some which I think I can identify are:

Richard Towneley & Towneley Hall.
Robert Peel or Burnley's first full time Policeman.?
Colliery shaft wheel head.
Cannons (James Yorke Scarlett , Crimean War)
St Peters Church.
Marshall's Library ?(Trafalgar St)
Mechanics Institute
The stocks (Church St / Godley Lane)

The buildings and objects near the May Pole dancers remain unknown. Can anybody help.

Is that a shuttle in teh top right-hand corner? To the right of the dancers, I think the large object may be a bobbin of thread. Presumably the arches are the railway arches leading up to Burnley Central

I think you are quite correct Maureen.

Plaques the image is quite faded and it looks as though there has been a bit of "photoshop" going on to the bottom left hand side of the image perhaps because the tree branches were in the way. To the right of the collery shaft wheel head is a large Horn or some such musical instrument, but it is invisible on this image and there is a tankard to the bottom left of the maypole dancers. The body of the dog above St Peters tower isn`t shown either but it stretches up towards the witch.

Is that the Bishops hat to the left of the maypole?

You are right about the Photo Shop (Paintshop Pro) When I took the picture it was a last minute shot before it started snowing. There is indeed quite a large tree in the way. The next time I'm in Burnley I'll try multiple shots for a better composition. Initially, I thought the content would be quite straight forward then you realise your limitations. One of the reasons for posting this image was to make people aware that some of the "modern art" can be quite interesting. Thanks for your comments.

How many of us walk in familiar areas looking straight ahead or down. We rarely look up. In my local town there is a stone high up on a building giving the name of an old pottery firm that was in my mother in laws family. It was years befire any of us really knew it was there.

Mels, you are right I have walked past it many times and have never ever looked closely at it until Plaques posted the photo. Shame on me as it is very interesting when you study it. I have to admit I dropped myself down on Google street view to get a better glimpse The next time I am down town I am going to go and have a proper look.

I still can`t get the mill/building to the left of the maypole dancers. I don`t think it is the Marshall Library, but I stand to be corrected.

Mo, I have looked at the images on Lancashire Lantern for Marshall Library, have a look and see what you think, I'm not 100% but there is not the same view of it.

I think the image of the 'policeman' is in fact reference to the army 30th Regiment of Foot which was based in Burnley.

Thanks Patricia. I like that idea. Which brings me round to thinking that General James Yorke Scarlett was in the 5th Dragoon guards stationed at the Barracks. But he does have an indirect mention with the cannons. Perhaps the cap badge may tell us something.
The image bottom left is an old style Billy can.

The cap badge is certainly similar to the 30th badge - an eight-pointed star topped with a crown

Not sure about the 'hat' as I haven't been able to find a picture of the uniform other than the red jackets.
