Hello,

We are in the process of trying to buy a house in Briercliffe. The house is called 'The Old Bakery' and is at the bottom of Parker Street, although its old bricked up door is on the main road. It is a block up from the spar on the other side of the road.

Does anyone know anything about this building? What it used to be before the house. It does have an unusual layout which suggests that it has been a business property at some point.

It was a cafe, and did weddings and parties upstairs. I think there is a photo of it somewhere on this site, found it, it is not in the foreground but on the right with the sign over. http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Pho ... 0Road4.htm

Yes I remember that one! Funeral ( bury them with a ham tea) type facilities but only small up stairs.
My grandmother saw many people off at that place. They made good oatcakes and she approved of the 'simple' surroundings after the trip up to Haggate.

Didn't it morph into Barclays Bank for a while in early 60's , or am on the wrong corner.

It also seems very close to the place that Elijah Banks operated a grocers and tailors business from on 1901 census

In the 40s and 50s the shop was a bakery run by the Jones family (the son Alwyn is on some of the Haggate School photos on the site).

I don't recall what the shop became later.
