Anybody know the word 'mowt' and it's origins?

Used to describe in my family anyway :oops: 'the child is mowting, thinks she is sick and wants sympathy

Also ' newky'???? a person who is in a brief but grumpy mood for the day.

I have heard of newky but not mowt. I still use it.

Maybe the the word mowt started off life as moaning?
It was the same Grandma who told me my new hat looked like a ' piano drum' translated later as a pea on a drum!!!! :oops:

I didn't know newky nor mowt, but a friend of mine came up with an interesting alternative to pea on a drum - pea in a bucket (I think she was mis-spelling the p word!).

Nowty was the word used for a bit grumpy when I was a child and I hate to admit it, but I still use when describing our 1yr old grandchild occasionally.

OK, marred or mared, as in 'she is so marred, makes a drama out of nothing, needs a huge plaster for a tiny cut ( :roll: who me, noooo)

"Moped" pronounced mowpd, meaning one who mopes about, not quite sulking but annoyingly wet?

I havn't heard of newky. My grandmother born in Briercliffe used the word narky. Same meaning.
