I know Peggy was an abbreviation but what for? Margaret? Or something else?

I've always found it was for Margaret.

Yes...I had an Auntie Peggy and her name was Margaret. I think Peg was a derivation of Meg, which is, of course, short for Margaret.

Thanks.

Next one please - would Molly be a substitute for Mary?

Yes. The name Molly is an English baby name. In English the meaning of the name Molly is: From the Gaelic Maili which is a pet form of Mary, meaning bitter.

The name Molly has been in use since the Middle ages as a pet name for Mary, though it is now also used independently. [1]

First used by the Irish, the nickname Molly was originally spelled “Mally.” The Irish connection to the name has continued, perhaps due in part to the Irish song Molly Malone and the secret workingman's society, called the “Molly MacGuires,” seem to make the name's Irish connection a lasting feature.

I have a Mally c1770.
I had never heard of the Molly MacGuires, but googled them, and they make very interesting reading.

The only Molly I have known was baptised Maureen (which in turn is an Irish derivative of Mary).
