Can anybody suggest how I track down this company and what the business was?

I have a share cert. with my gt.grandfathers name on it, plus his father ( I think) as a director and another of the same surname as secretary.

Date is June 1901.

As far as I know this branch of the family never left Burnley

Any help will be appreciated as always.

Thanks Gloria, I'll have a go at that and see who and what they were.

I'm not sure if this is any good to you. I found it in an old Barratts directory 1872-78. There are some entries about J & W Roberts. both in Burnley and Thorneyholme. which may be near Clitheroe. (Dunsop Bridge area). or another bit of Burnley at that time. Can't say I've come across it before.

I believe that they had a Nelson mill which was later , 'Cottons' and after that other firms, so the building still will probably be still there somewhere, unless it it is under Morrisons car park
The three brothers Thistlethwaite, opened more of the mill in Clitheroe but I have not had chance to get over to hunt in the library yet.

Thorneyholme is between Barley and Roughlee.

You are right Rex. I discounted it from today's maps because I couldn't see a building large enough to be a mill. A 1890's map shows it as Thorneyholme Mill near where the current farm is. Walked past it many a time and never knew it was a mill. Map Ref. E. 385520 N. 440033

Ah! now I have got it, thanks for the clues.

Still never traced their distant ancestor George who popped up in Newchurch in mid 1700 , he's the one that either slipped through all records or

arrived on the Starship Enterprise

People all around the world who count him as an ancestor, can't find the family he came from, and I think i'm beyond caring but tis odd that they went back to run a mill 200 years later,in the shadow of Newchurch, I won't share that with my kin though, they will have me hunting again

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk has a liquidation notice for the company on 19th August, 1902. They were at Salford Bridge Mill, Clitheroe and were cotton manufacturers. The solicitor acting for the company was Frederick Augustus Hargreaves of 7 Grimshaw Street, Burnley.

There is also another notice dated 29th May, 1903.

If you do a search I would just put the date in and Roberts and Co. in the exact search box - the OCR isn`t that good.
