Has anybody in there researching ever had need to look at the Bishops Transcripts for the1700?
I'm told that the original documents are available (somewhere) and that they are easier to read than the copies made at later dates.

I have my doubts about this although at that period the church would be a source of everything that went on?

I have here in Staffordshire. I can't say that they were any easier to read. They are just copies of the Parish Records

I have read them in Preston quite a while ago and I think they had been transcribed into book form. You could e-mail/ring them and check.

Yes Gloria that sounds something like the book I read with Newchurch in Pendle details.

I'm trying to find where the records for Burneston in Yorkshire for 1700 would be kept, probably at North Allerton knowing the way my ancestors have left me a difficult trail to follow) and the family search website makes me so

If Burneston has a library you could contact them, if not try the library in the nearest large town. They probably won't have what you want but could fire you in the right direction. Most libraries nowadays have quite a bit of family history knowledge.

Like the idea of being 'fired in the right direction', but joking apart, it's a little place and no library listed so I will keep on searching,

I've not a lot of experience of B.T., but in the few cases where I've seen both Parish and B.T. entries for the same "event", there's often been more detail in the local entries - notes about families, etc.

Oh wow, thanks to you both for the previous two messages, I will pursue this.

My family history is like malaria, just when I think I have put all the info. away and can relax, I get another attack and spend half the night hunting obscure ideas which make sense at 1.00 am and don't in the morning

I really like that idea of it being like Malaria, although to me it's more like an annoying cough - you think it's cleared up, then - back it comes, and keeps you up all night.

I can relate to the annoying cough that keeps coming back. It is a very addictive hobby.

As a general point, BTs quite often exist when the original register is lost.

Often however when BTs are indicated in a catalogue as existing for a run of dates, e.g. 1700-1800, there will be gaps, since each year in theory the incumbent or parish clerk had to send off the transcript to the bishop. Clearly this might not always work smoothly !
