I wasn't aware it had ever belonged to the Diocese - I always thought it belonged to the Parker family. If I remember aright, Roger said it was sometimes occupied by several families at a time - just taking on a few rooms. There were even shops in there at one point

I don’t know when the Leaver’s moved to Extwistle Hall, but if we follow the parish records, this family lived at Batty Hole (1798), Monk Hall (1800-1803), Marsden (1806-1811), and they were definitely living at Extwistle Hall in 1827 when James Leaver died and left his Will.

James Leaver of Extwistle Hall, Will date 23rd November 1827

The last Will and Testament of James Leaver of Extwistle Hall in the same Township in Connection with Briercliffe, in the Chapelry of Burnley and County of Lancaster, farmer. After my just Debts, funeral expenses and the Probate hereof are duly paid, I do hereby order and direct that my three Children Abraham, Mary and William shall have all the Beds, Bedding, Milkbowls together with all the Furniture within the House that belongs to me equally divided among them by my Executors herein after named on Account of their good Services done for me to be their Property absolutely for ever. Farther I do hereby order and direct that all my Cattle, Hay, Corn and husbandry Utensils shall be sold by Auction as soon after my Decease as can be most profitable and convenient, and the Monies arising herefrom equally divided among my eight Children viz. John, Nanny, Abraham, Mary, Sally, Betty, James and William, no One receiving more or less than another, to be their Portion absolutely for ever, to be paid in twelve kalendar Months after my Decease. Moreover, if any of my Children herein before named shall be dissatisfied and unpeaceable at this Distribution of my Property, I do hereby order that such dissatisfied Child or Children shall have no Share or Portion of the said Property or Money arising therefrom whatsoever. Also that what is apportioned to such, if they had been satisfied and peaceable, shall be equally divided among those who are so satisfied. Lastly, I do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my Brother Bannister Leaver and my Son Abraham Leaver joint Executors of this my last Will and Testament. And for every Day spent in the Execution hereof they are hereby allowed two Shillings and six Pence per Day each. In Witness whereof I have hereto set my Hand and Seal this twenty third Day of November in the Year of our Lord one Thousand eight Hundred and twenty seven. Signed, sealed published and declared by the said James Leaver to be his last Will and Testament in the Presence of Abraham Nowell, John Holt and Levi Heap.

Wonder which William this is? Nearest I can find is born 1811 but I don't know when he died.

Just checked - he was still alive for the 1881 census so not him.

This one will be John (13/8/1815 - 1/7/1864) son of Thomas Leaver & Sally.

Loss to Haggate

Haggate has lost a big friend by the death which occurred on Friday night of Mrs Mary Leaver, widow of Mr James Leaver, or Rose Cottage, Cockden, Briercliffe. Mrs Leaver, who was 84 years of age, had been ill for the last month, and she passed away peacefully. She had lived all her life in the district, having been born there, and she was highly respected for her many gracious acts. A generous giver, she will be much missed at Haggate Baptist Church, where she has been a keen supporter.
She leaves two sons, one of whom is Mr. A. Leaver. The funeral will take place at Haggate Chapel at noon to-day.

Ellen, wife of Thomas LEAVER, of Netherwood, May 25th 1859 aged 55yrs.
John, son, April 18th 1885, aged 25 yrs.
Ellen, wife of above Thomas, December 31st 1893, 72 yrs.
Above Thomas, August 1st 1902, aged 84 yrs.

For anyone referring to this, please note the gravestone or transcription error.
Ellen Leaver#1 (nee Ellen WHITAKER, b. ~1813 daughter of Thomas Whitaker and Mary Thomas) died in 1869, not 1859. Ref BMD. This also accounts for why she was still around on the 1861 census, and that being 55 years old when she died seems correct.

I believe Thomas quickly remarried in 1870, this time to Ellen HARGREAVES, b abt 1822

Further to my last message, I may be wrong with Ellen Hargreaves, could well be Ellen Nutter.
Can find no record of a marriage of Ellen Nutter to Thomas Leaver on FreeBMD or Ancestry, BUT is IS listed on Lancashire BMD.

and there is this on LOPC, which seems to fit well with the place of birth.

Baptism: 2 Sep 1821 St Mary, Newchurch in Pendle, Lancashire, England
Ellin Nutter - Daughter of John Nutter & Betty
Abode: Whitehaugh
Occupation: Weaver
Baptised by: John Whitaker
Register: Baptisms 1813 - 1822, Page 95, Entry 757
Source: LDS Film 1278872

Maybe someone can clarify.

Martin

Hi Martin,
I thought I may have your Ellen Nutter but I was wrong. Sorry..
Portia (Maureen) has Leavers so she may be of help. I don't know if she comes on regularly but you could try sending her a pm.
