Hi, if you get no joy on here, it might be worth contacting Burnley library or Burnley Historical Society. I have never heard of it.

Thanks Gloria,

The findmypast website has lots of announcements for their performances, they must have been quite popular. This is from a report in the Burnley paper:

Burnley Express dated 20 October 1909

25 years a Band Conductor
Presentation to Burnley Gentleman
Public Recognition and Charitable Institutions’ Thanks

After 25 years association with the Bank Hall Reed Band as conductor, Mr. Matthew Birkett wielded the baton for the last time on Sunday afternoon as a concert which, fittingly enough, was given in the grounds at Bank Hall, being one more addition to the long list of concerts which the Band had given in the cause of charity. The report gives details of what he had accomplished, it later mentions that over £1,000 was raised for charities and “Hoping that you will be long spared to treasure these, our good wishes, we remain, on behalf of the Band, yours sincerely, Messrs Charles Smith, Jeremiah Brown, William James Mills, WILLIAM WISDOM, Henry Waddington, Joseph Clegg, Alfred Smith, John James Brown and John Waddington.”
