Could anyone suggest parentage for a Willie or William Burrows born about 1871, probably in Nelson, who had a Martha Alice Nutter as his wife? I'm sort of trying to "eliminate him from enquiries", as you might say.... I suspect he'll be non-conformist, if he was baptised. Any ideas gratefully received.....

Looked for his marriage on lancs opc hoping it would give details of father but couldn't see it. There are two possibilities in 1891 and 1901 census. Do you have names for his children, that sometimes gives a clue to the parents names??
I'll try and have a better look later.

I'd tried Ancestry and Lancs Parish Clerks online, too, with no success. I had a thought his Dad might have been a James Burrows, possibly a Quarryman, born late 1820s, and his mother a Mary - not a lot to help, is it? His children were a John, a Lillie and another James. I think he was something called a Warp dresser.
It'sd probably a long shot - thanks anyway, Gloria, for your help. Burrows are such a confusing mob, aren't they?

Do you know when he died? I'm wondering if he might be on the 1939 register - that gives a date of birth.

I've had a look and there is 1 in Burnley and 1 in Nelson. I susoect there is some sort of copyright that would stop me from posting the results in their entirity but this one is at 30 Queen St Burnley and married to Margaret S
Willie Burrows 05 Jan 1875 Secretary & Salesman (Cotton Manufacturer)

And this one is at Leeds Road, Nelson and is married to Hannah. (maybe a second wife?)

Possible death for Martha Alice taken from FMP
First name(s) MARTHA A
Last name BURROWS
Gender Female
Birth day -
Birth month -
Birth year 1873
Age 60
Death quarter 4
Death year 1933

This is the marriage for Willie and Martha, Register Office Attended which is why it's not on Lan-opc
Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1896

Though none of this solves who his parents were, it does give a birthdate

I think this could be Willie Burrows in 1891.

Hope Terrace, Little Marsden, Burnley
RG12/3376 Folio 127 Page 16
Edmondson Burrows Head Married Male 51 1840 Worsted Cloth Looker Lancashire, England
Ann Burrows Wife Married Female 50 1841 - Lancashire, England
Willie Burrows Son Single Male 20 1871 Cotton Warp Finisher Lancashire, England
Thomas Burrows Son - Male 16 1875 Worsted Weaver Lancashire, England
Margaret Burrows Daughter - Female 12 1879 Woollen Winder Lancashire, England
Harry Burrows Son - Male 10 1881 ? Lancashire, England
Fred Burrows Son - Male 7 1884 - Lancashire, England
Albert Burrows Grandson - Male 1 1890 - Nelson, Lancashire, England

On the 1901 census Willie and Martha are at 9, Rigby Street, Nelson, RG13/3879 Folio 12 Page 15. Edmondson is still living a few pages away at Hope Terrace RG13/3879 Folio 10 Page 11.

I'm certain the Willie Burrows who was at Queen Street and Secretary / Salesman is not the right one. The warp dresser sounds a lot more likely. I'm fairly sure the one with Willie's wife as Martha Alice NUTTER, is right, I might be able to get a father's name from that certificate, and that should help .... the eldest child has Nutter as a middle name, quite a good hint. as you say, the different birthdate may help me try to find that parentage.
I'd got Willie with wife and children in 1901 at Rigby Street, and 1911 Berkley or Bentley Street (can't read my own handwriting) - but I'd suspected Willie himself might have been in 1891 at Southfield Street (next to a chippy!) in Great Marsden , with parents John and Martha, and I was trying to check it out. I'll have a hunt round the Edmundson Burrows with wife Ann, now, and see if I can get any closer to a certificate-worthy decision.
Thank you again for your help and time, Mel.

I saw the one with father called John but it was the occupation that made me think son of Edmondson could be the right one.

I agree. I've done a bit more digging since yesterday, and I'm very much inclined to follow that line and check it out properly. Thank you so much for your time and efforts.
