I have been researching my family tree (attached file) and this has lead me to the genealogy website of David Robert Wooten - 9august.com.

I am quite sure that my 12th Great Grandfather is Robert Whitaker who I believe is the brother of William Whitaker DD (Father of Alexander Whittaker – who was responsible for the baptism and conversion of Pocahontas).

On the website 9august.com it traces Robert’s and William’s family line back to Sir John Whitaker http://www.9august.com/DRW/pafg19.htm#120

and then to Johias http://www.9august.com/DRW/pafg38.htm#19445

but on http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... html#I2897

instead of Sir John Whitaker it takes them back to Richard Whitaker http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... html#I1614

then to Gilbert Whitaker http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... html#I1629

Of course, I would prefer to be a descendant of a knight of the realm, but it is confusing which line to take. I was wondering if anyone is researching the same family line and has any further information.

(My family surname curiously changed from ‘Whitaker’ to ‘Whittaker’ between the 1871 and 1881 census ?)

Was William a cricketer and did he go missing in the war? If so, we've got lots of info about him on our website (I run the Lowerhouse Cricket Club site.)

William Whitaker (1548–1595) was a prominent Protestant Calvinistic Anglican churchman, academic, and theologian.

Don't worry about the two spellings, these were by no means fixed in the later part of the nineteenth century.
