Hello,
I am researching my family tree and have found information in the 1851 census that may be referring to a relative, the address given is Birley Row Briercliffe .I have been on the society pages and seen some mention of Birley Row but I am unable to locate the place on a map. Please can someone advise me as to locality of this place.
Thank you,
Julie Blackburn

Hi,
I found someone living there in 1851 census, and then looked at the addresses nearby, it looks as though it was in the Bank Hall area of Burnley, I'd hazard a vague guess at somewhere between St Peters church and the canal bridge on Colne Rd, probably where the old Platers and Stampers building is opposite the old Bank Hall Maternity Hospital. Hope this helps, sorry it's a bit vague.

Old maps 1851 has a Burleigh Street near Folds Street which was near it on the census, also not far away is Birley Place, note spellings as on map.
These are both further up Colne Rd over the canal bridge to the west of main road. If you enlarge the map it brings the street names up.
Hope you can make sense of this.

Hi there,

Better late than never! Burleigh Street is down Stoneyholme, it runs parallel with Folds Street and Oswald Street. Oswald Street is near to the canal.

Birley Place is a development of bungalows between Old Hall Street and Colne Road
