Does anyone have any info on Haggate House. I have looked on the site and its on the Briercliffe Census and hoped someone may have heard of it or maybe its mentioned in Rogers book thanks.

I've had a look in Rogers book Sue and the only mention of it is that it had a well. Not much help is it!

I googled Haggate House and it shows info for a member of Briercliffe Parish Council. Maybe it's worth contacting him Sue? If you click his name, you can email him.

Thanks Mel it was a farm. In the church records I found my gtgt grandfathers sister had married Thomas Taylor whose father Robert was a farmer at Haggate House I had got stuck with my immediate family tree and was just having a look around as you do.I will put it on my list of things to see next time in Burnley

Yes it's the house behind the bowling green. It was a farm in the 1950's/1960's. The farmer then was Jimmy Dalton. I think "The Happy Cot" was some-where on his land or nearby. Gloria does HE remember the Happy Cot?

What was 'The Happy Cot'?

David has mailed me. Said he will try to get the picture but thinks it is surrounded by trees.

The Happy Cot was like a village hall. Roger mentions it in his book a couple of times.

"There was an older club in Briercliffe though, known as the Central Club, everyone called it the Happy Cot. It stood at the bottom of Sutcliffe Street and was a timber building in it's own grounds. The Happy Cot was opened in 1900 by Dr Muir at a cost of £200. It was capable of seating one hundred people when it was built. It was, in it's early years described as a social institute and became a venue for young and old alike. Of the buildings which have been pulled down in recent years the Happy Cot is the one which is most missed. The Happy Cot was the nearest thing we had to a Village Hall, a facility which is sadly lacking and which many people would like to see provided."

I remember the Happy Cot because Haggate School burnt down when I was a pupil there (not my fault!) We were all moved into Tennyson Street School until it was re-built. On rainy days we had our PE lessons in the Happy Cot.
