According to "A Lancashire Township" Page 78, The "Happy Cot" was demolished,Roger does not mention anything about a fire.

Sorry, just re read the post,it was Haggate School that had the fire.

The Happy Cot was at the top of the street where the doctors used to be on the corner of----hope that makes sense. It was pulled down and new houses were built there around 30yrs ago.

Yes David, at the top of Cobden St. The house in the pic used to be a shop (general store) run/owned by John Greenwood.

I asked Roger if he has a picture of Haggate House, he doesn't think he has a decent one but he said there is a picture of the bowling green that shows Haggate House in the background. I'm not sure if this is the picture he is referring to http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Photo%20Archive/Briercliffe/Bowling%20Green1.htm or if there is another one in the collection that I have not yet borrowed. He's going to have a look and include it in the next batch I borrow if there is one.

David, if you feel like door knocking and asking if they will let you take a picture or have a picture we could borrow or they can email to you/me/anyone, I'll buy you a pint as thanks.

The fire was I think early 1950's I remember going to see it shortly afterwards, the roof caved in and from a little girl's perspective it was a big fire that had been burning! I think it took a while to rebuild. My sister Sues does set things going, people throughout the country trying to find Haggate Hse for her whilst she is I know having a very cosy Christmas in Norwich!!

Judi Haggate School burnt down in the early 1960's whilst I was a pupil there. I'll post the correct date when I find it. It wasn't the early 1950's I hadn't been born then!

No Mel that isn't Haggate House in the pic, those are the houses on the main road. Haggate House is off to the back right of the pic.
