yes, and I loved North West! I was at school with a chap whose father was called G W R Lines (Great Western Railway, for those too young to remember!). But I haven't come across any odd names or occupations in my research - yet. That's why I wondered about the Witch.

A lot of parents called their sons after mum's maiden name which gave us all a clue (sometimes) but it also gave us a headache cos it could come from way back!

I came across an article in the Burnley Express November 1916 about the death of Mary Nutter (nee Varley) born 2/2/1819, at Marsden Heights. Wife of John Nutter, mother of Nancy, John, Margaret, Susannah, Richard & Sarah.

If these Nutters are part of anyone's tree I'll happily transcribe the article for the forum. Otherwise it's a bit long.

Did you make it to the library this week Maureen? Am sure you found them very helpful the ladies in the reference archives.

Yes David, I just got back about an hour ago. And they were indeed very helpful. I just wish someone would buy them a new printer for the microfilm reader - it took them ages to get it to work for me.

I always play the helpless male when I go in,they scurry around and I just sit back and watch them in amazement
It is a pity that some of the older papers do not copy very well,particularly the photos.
I think next time I go I will see if they will photograph with my camera any better, at least then I can enlarge them to try and read them easier perhaps.

I would be very interested in the Nutter article please. The Varley family are in my Nutter tree, in as far as Ellen Varley b abt 1836 of Marsden Heights married James Nutter son of Samuel Nutter & Mary Watson.
Ellen's sister Mary was b. abt 1821 acc. to info I have already - do you think it could be the same one?
James had a brother John so 2 brothers could have married 2 sisters??

I'm fizzing! It just took me half an hour (with interruptions) to type up the details of the article and when I hit the submit button I discovered I'd been timed out. Everything I'd typed has gone. Oh woe is me. I'll have another go after tea and a large gin.

I have found Mary Nutter + children that you mentioned in 1861 when she was a widow so am working my way backwards!

She's on 1841 as Mary Varley. I'm pretty sure this is the one:
HO107; Piece 509; Book: 3; Civil Parish: Whalley; County: Lancashire; Enumeration District: 38; Folio: 17; Page: 31
because the article says she was a twin and there's a Martha of the same age.
I found a likely marriage at bmd burnley 12/1842 21 p138

Margret Nutter 8 Mo

(spellings as cut/pasted from Ancestry census!)

My Varley parents (James & Ann) are in Marsden Heights in 1841 & John Nutter (20) is at Finsley (same page). There is a Martha Varley in this family but she isn't a twin - she is 6 years younger (acc to 1841) than Mary.
Mary & Martha as twins (22) are daughters of Edmund & Mary Varley of Catlow Row in 1841. Does this fit with your references?
