Yesterday I came across two sisters who were married at the church of Briercliffe on the same day. Has anyone else come across anything like this?

1. Thomas PICKLES was born in 1805 in Extwistle, Briercliffe, Lancashire, England. He died on 17 May 1876 in Roggerham Gate Extwistle, Briercliffe, Lancashire, England.
Thomas married Alice UNKNOWN. Alice was born in 1802 in Worsthorne, Lancashire, England. She died on 11 Nov 1878 in Briercliffe, Lancashire, England.
They had the following children:
Mary PICKLES was born in 1836 in Extwistle, Briercliffe, Lancashire, England.

Mary married Lawrence HALSTEAD son of Robert HALSTEAD on 8 Feb 1862 in Church of Briercliffe, Lancashire, England. Lawrence was born in 1835.


Margaret PICKLES was born in 1841 in Worsthorne, Lancashire, England.

Margaret married John TATHAM son of Hartley TATHAM on 8 Feb 1862 in Church of Briercliffe, Lancashire, England. John was born in 1839.

This Mary Pickles married Lawrence Halstead, who would be my father's great-uncle. Another brother, the eldest son, John Robert, is my direct ascendant. Photos in archives of John Robert.
So...descendants of Lawrence would be my relatives too, right? As would be descendants of Mary Jane and Edwin, the other siblings of Lawrence and J.R.
Oh, how the spiderweb grows! I don't have a wall big enough!

Ya think? I am certainly suspecting that those Halsteads, who seem to have strains all over the place, were a prolific lot! Got around a bit!

The librarian at Halifax was telling me that he has Briercliffe Halsteads last week. Apparently they still hold a Halstead service at St James...I think he said in May but it was certainly summer time. He seems to think that it was just a common name and there were lots of lines?

I have cases of babies in the same family Baptised on the same day even though they were born on different dates.
I understand they used to have "Baptism days" and parents would baptise all their unbaptised children together.

...and they certainly did that at Haggate. Babies sometimes, but often adults. I remember being appalled on the one and only time I attended a Haggate baptism when I saw them completely dunk someone under the water in the pool they had for that purpose. I was about 8. Scarred me for life!!

For a moment Sue, I thought you said "completely drunk"!
Now that would have been scarey.

I have a pair of Stuttard sisters married on the same day in Christ Church, Accrington in the early 1840s.

Does this usually mean a double-wedding? Perhaps its cheaper!

I also have another case in Marske-in-Cleveland. Its an interesting story in tis own right.

My maternal grandmother was born Mabel Oxbury in 1900. She had an elder brother James. James Oxbury and George Start married a pair of sisters named Searle on the same day in the same church in Marske-in-Cleveland. Many years later after George Start's death James' wife also died and he married George's widow his own sister-in-law.

What makes this even more interesting for me is that George Start had a sister Eliza Jane. In the mid 1920s Eliza Jane, now married as Metcalfe, scandalized the village of Marske by carrying on with a black Nigerian sailor. Eventually the matriarchs of family and village got together and issued an ultimatum for her to stop and she promptly ran off with him instead. A few years later she married him in Cardiff - his name was Henry Bassey - and their 7th and last child was the famous Shirley!
