From "Briercliffe in Picture Postcards". For anyone who has this book, it is picture number 14 that I am looking at. The picture is of the Reading Rooms and is of a similar angle to this one http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/Photo%20Archive/Haggate/Reading%20Rooms2.htm
Part of the text reads - 'Almost all of the buildings were built on what once was Haggate's Village Green. Behind, there are still a few cottages but a lot have been demolished. They once looked across the Green to the Hare and Hounds and Spencer Row which was where the Co-op shop was.'

Does this mean that Davids picture, above, was once Spencer Row?

Don't think so Mel, the co-op was nearer the Hare and Hounds. The village green must have been in the angle of Acre before the shop on the corner and the houses on the road were built.
Isn't this topic getting interesting, perhaps we could get Roger on about it next week----he must know something.

The houses that are between the Hare and Hounds and the row of cottages on the photo I posted are relatively new stone built houses .I would imagine that before these were built there would have been a row of old buildings and that was probably Spencer Row. I bet that Folley Row was somewhere in the area of acre street behind the Reading Rooms.
Think you need to get John Bentley and or Roger in a corner and quiz them.

My great grandmother in later life lived in the back to back houses next to the Hare and Hounds. She used to take her jug to the pub every night to be filled with beer- very hereditary! My mum recalls visiting her and this could possibly be Folley Row she wasn't too sure. She recalls the houses only had one room downstairs not even a scullery. From all the above descriptions it sounds as if it was nearer to Th'Acre. I lived for 7 years overlooking Th'Acre. Not much changes!

In the Lancashire Township book, it says that Spencer Row "was demolished recently". That would make it the 1970's wouldn't it?

I can't remember it and I was up ther in the 70's. No demolition that I recall.

The houses next to the Hare and Hounds were back to back. They had the co-op at the end, they were single storey on the road side, and those houses extended backwards over the backs which were three storeys. So the houses at the back had two storeys and another storey from the house behind over the top. Hope that makes sense.

And presumably the old bowling green was where the pub car park is now behind that row of houses.

What a shame they were knocked down, bet they would have been fantastic knocked through, think of the view out of the back.

Friends of mine live in the row of cottages I posted on that photo earlier.They have a lovely view from their garden over the fields down to Cockden and beyond.Bit like the view I have really .

Yes David the bowling green was where the car park is now.

Is that where you went for the 'bring a firework' party last year?
