Yeah - good. I saw that one and passed it over because of the wife's name. Like Gloria says, never dismiss anything. That makes 3 wives - regular little Henry VIII wasn't he?

Impressive Mel, I have put both his name and his wifes name into Ancestry 1891 and neither have come up. How did find him???
Are you now to be known as "Advanced Genealogist"?

Don't know how Mel did it, I found it by searching for Bannister Laver, but like I say I dismissed it. Silly me.

I even tried Bannister with no surname, just date and place of birth and it didn't find him. Probably all this rain has flooded my brain---no comment

I searched for male born 1824 +/-5 in Briercliffe. I put no names in search. It only gave about 50 results. It might have been different if i had given me 100's of results.

PS
If it is the right family, William is missing. There's a death on Lancashire BMD, 1870, William Leaver aged 13 that might cover it...

Kris, I do think it's him. I searched without surname for every combination of James (wife Mary/ Mary Ann), Maria (father James), Mary Ann, (husband James) etc. In the end I tried Mel's trick of looking for a nameless female, born Preston 1832 +/- 2, resident Blackburn, and this was the closest match.
The family names & ages all fit, (apart from missing William) as does the father's occupation.
I can't find any other candidate for the James born Briercliffe.

Don't know whether you've seen this, but there's a marriage on Lancashire bmd 1857:
Groom: LEVER James
Bride: TOWNLEY Mary Ann
Where: Blackburn, St Mary the Virgin (Blackburn Cathedral) Blackburn Register number: CE12/21/184.
It's the only James & Mary Ann & the year fits their ages & the dob's of the children. Also the place.
