ANOTHER LOOK AT SYKE

Ah doornt know if yer know it,
but things are changing up at Syke,
they've getten th'aggate clock ter run,
but fergetten ter meck it strike.

In olden daysm foorks at lived up theer,
when boiling eggs fer tea,
if they couldn't tell time wi th'aggate clock,
would sing "Abide with me".

An when they'd sung two verses,
the egg should then be done,
ah tried it, but ah must ah sung too fast,
yer should ah sin it run.

A lot o foork when reading this,
will say am telling lies,
an ex mayor ot Syke said his granny did it,
befoor his very eyes.

Ther were some things abairt th'owd clock,
ah'd like yore foorks ter know,
ther'd be a heck of a row at th'aggate,
if that clock were one minute slow.

But if it wer two or three minutes fast,
noorbody at th'aggate ud worry,
cos they hev plenty o'time ter catch bus,
withairt em hevving ter hurry.

One owd lass who wer cooking dinner,
thowt she'd play it safe,
who'd yerd the clock strike quarter,
ans sed she'd learve it till the 'aif.

But alas fer that owd woman,
that aif air never struck,
springs o't clock hed all dried up,
an soor too hed her duck.

Th'Owd Syker------as I write this the Haggate clock has stopped again, 2nd Feb 1975

I walked past the clock last night,it was spot on for time and really looks well when it is illuminated.
