The current talk about the Chapel records has lead to a discussion between myself and a friend about the state of Haggate Baptist Chapel. Does anyone know who is responsible for the upkeep of the Chapelyard? Or if anyone is looking after it at all? It's a shame to let it go the same way as the Chapel went!

I imagine the upkeep must be the responsibility of the Church, but it must be a major task to do more than the minimal, given the huge area. Perhaps the Society would have this as a major discussion item at a meeting ? (not that I am actually a member !)

This is sort of what my friend and I were saying. I'm going to see what Rogers thoughts are on this when I next speak to him.

I can't claim credit, David Barker found the link and emailed it to me. He has been sending me lots of Briercliffe photos lately. We have quite a few images taken from as near to the same angle as possible of the older images. Does that make sense?

Copies of the Parish Records can be viewed at Burnley, Colne and Nelson libraries
Though there is a slight variation in what each library holds.
The original registers are kept at the chapel, sadly burials from October 1794 to August 1811 are missing.
The Chapel was demolished in the late 1990's. There is a large graveyard.

Copies of Hill Lane Chapel's records are also at Burnley, Colne and Nelson. Hill Lane has a small graveyard.

I could be wrong but I am certain this wasn’t broken last time I went to Haggate. Someone should take it and give it to the Society, we need to save our history.

Yes it was broken apparently by the demolition people.Roger is aware of it.If you look on this thread you will see a similar photo Kris.

Also Kris,if you look at photo number 10 on the demolition photos I got for Mel and enlarge it you can clearly see the date stone in the right hand corner and it is broken even then.

Those are great pics David!! I am glad it wasn’t cracked more recently, but I still think we should take it before some builder uses it for hardcore!

Roger showed a picture of it at the last meeting. They had asked the demolition people to save it, but it got broken and taken away with the rest of the building materials.

well they must have brought it back Gloria because it is in exactly the same posiition now as it was on photo 10.

I'm sure Roger said it had gone, Mel will verify that. It has to be repaired, it cannot be left as it is.
