Forgive me if I have already posted this query, not sure if it was the computer or me that was misbehaving so I am positing it again just in case.

I am looking at the Pollard side of my family and am trying to find the death certificate for John Pollard who died in the Burnley area about 1841 to 1851. I checked up on Ancestry and have found that there were 15 of them died in that period of time.

Is there anywhere where I can check up the certificates prior to purchase as I don't really want to spend £100 before I find the right guy.

I know approximately how old he was - and also what his occupation was and that he lived in Lower House in 1841 so sorting him out shouldn't be too bad.

Any ideas folks??

If you know where he might be buried, it's probably worth checking the burial registers first.

He's not in the Pollard report I got from Cemsearch for Burnley. He lived at Lower House, Habergham Eaves and may be Methodist. His son was christened at Padiham Methodist chapel. I should look at Wheatley Lane as it was Methodist, but is that likely for someone from Habergham Eaves?

I wouldn't have thought Burnley cemetery was open in 1851 was it?
Padiham could be your place. Do you know of anyone in the Lancs who might be able to do you a look-up?

This is when the distance becomes frustrating isn't it!!

Have you tried lancashire bmd? It usually shows age at date of death so that could narrow it down.

No-one in Lancs now that could do the look up I'm afraid. I'm not sure of his age at death but I could eliminate some (young) deaths which would narrow it down. That would be a step.

Now I'm going to sound stupid..... LancashireBMD ?

Padiham seems to pop up occasionally in research. I'll see what I can find.

If there is someone out there looking at William Pollard born 1844 ish and died in 1900s some time, I have 2 death certificates going spare. I'll put details up when I think of it and have them to hand

Ok, that has reduced the number of possibles from 15 down to 5. Good going. Now I can have a look at him again in 1841 and see what approximate age he should have been at the times he may have died and also look at the geography again. He lived at Lower houses, Habergham Eaves so the question is whether his death would have been registered at Padiham or Burnley.

This has cheered up my day immensely. It hadn't been too good since I came home from Kent, I'll keep you updated.

I have a Sarah Pollard who lived at Lower House, Habergham (daughter of Hartley Pollard). She is buried at All Saints, Habergham Eaves and her death was registered at Burnley, 1856.

That's interesting as I googled the maps on Habergham, Burnley centre and Padiham and the reckoning was that Padiham was the closest, but then closest isn't everything.

I guess there would have been a district boundary that kept Habergham Eaves inside Burnley.
