I also have Heaps. Elizabeth Heap born about 1818 at Holden Clough married Robert Sutcliffe in 1842.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Heap. I've never found out who her mother was although I have one marriage for a Thomas Heap and Mary Stanworth. I need to locate baptisms for Elizabeth and her siblings before I pin my hopes in this Mary though as Thomas is a widow on the 1841 census.

Peter Heap has submitted his Heap family tree for inclusion on the main site. It can be accessed at http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/paf/peterheap/index.htm

There is quite a lot to say, assuming yours is mine (!)

I'll put down some detail when I have a bit more time, soon. In the meantime can you say briefly how he fits in to your family ?

Hi

Joshua is somewhat an enigma. My gt gt grandmother was Elizabeth Ramsbottom whom I am led to believe lived (unmarried) with Joshua Heap and her daughter Alice Hannah Ramsbottom. They are recroded on 1871/81 census as Joshua/Elizabeth/Alice Heap living at Brown Street Burnley, in a confectioner's shop. For some reason we cannot trace Alice Hannah's birth (though we have her marriage cert.) On 1891 census (after Joshua had died) Elizabeth is shown as living with her son in law and daughter (John & Alice Hannah Sagar) but is still named as Heap. Elizabeth died in 1894 on HAmmerton St but her death cert shows her as Elizabeth Ramsbottom. My mum also has a memoriam card for Joshua Heap. I also know that Joshua was married to a lady called Sarah? (see 1861 census). I wait to hear from you and maybe after 5 years I can sort out this mystery.

I'm afraid it must be a different Joshua. My initial post isn't quite accurate, in that although Sarah didn't die till 1886, Joshua died in 1852. The couple didn't have a Joshua, as far as I know.

Sorry !

Do get back in touch if you think after all there might be some connection.

Mel:

I noticed you have a John Heap in your Family Tree, who married Mary Walton about 1840. I come through James Walton, born 15 Jan 1823 in Briercliffe, brother of Mary Walton. Their parents are Thomas Walton, born 1795, & Elizabeth (or Betty) Hoyle, born about 1791. 8)

I don't have anything more on John Heap. I do have several more generations of Walton.

My wife is also a Heaps, but her line is from a different Lancashire Town.

Hi Mike
I have not confirmed that marriage, it's a while since I did that particular research but my notes suggest that it is based on the census returns as I do not actually have a copy of the marriage certificate.
Do you have a copy of the marriage? Is John's father Thomas?

I got the email you sent through the site 'Contact Us' page, thanks. What is the other Lancashire town? Shattonblade has quite a bit of Heap information, I wonder if it will be of interest to him.

The earliest Heaps on my Wife's line is John Heaps, married to Ann Woodhouse at Walton-le-Dale, Lancas., on 4 December 1764. They don't know where he came from before that.

There are parts of my Walton Family I'm having some trouble verifying, but I'm pretty sure about the census info. I do not have the marriage certificates for any of these yet.

Are they Heaps or Heap? The ones in my tree have only shown up as Heap. I know enumerator errors were common though.

I need to familiarise myself with my Heap ancestors. It's quite a while since I really looked at them.

Hi Rex

Was your Joshua born in Stockport? I would love some info on Joshua Heap, he is somewhat a mystery to me. My direct e mail address is sealrescuehorne@sky.com

Thanks

I have a marriage for a William Sutcliffe to Sarah Heap 21 May 1795 at St Peter, Burnley. I believe this is the census for them-
1841
HO107/506/15 folio 31 pg 15
Yeomans, Briercliffe with Extwistle
William Sutcliffe,70,farmer,Y
Sarah Sutcliffe,70,Y
Joseph Sutcliffe,38,Ag Lab,Y
William Sutcliffe,33,Ag LAb,Y
James Sutcliffe,29,Ag Lab,Y
Ellen Sutcliffe,14, ,Y

1851
HO107/2251 folio 131 pg 17
Yeomans, Briercliffe
Sarah Sutcliffe, Head, W, 79, Farmer 16 acres land b.Briercliffe
Joseph, son, W 49, Lab Stone quarry b.Briercliffe
Sarah, Dau, U, 46, Servant, b.Briercliffe
William Son, U, 42, Lab land, b.Briercliffe
James, Son U 39, Cust?, b.Briercliffe
Ellen, Dau, U, 24, Servant in house, b.Briercliffe
William, Grandson, U, 20, Firebeater, b.Briercliffe
Thomas, Grandson, 15, Power loom weaver, b.Briercliffe
Mary Heap, Lodger, Un, 7, Pauper Hand loom weaver, b.Briercliffe

I believe Sarah was born about 1770 though have not looked for any birth records for her. Can anyone account for either her or the Mary Heap who is lodging with her in 1851?
