Hello!

I am looking for some help and information on my ancestors.
After getting information from my grandparents I found entries in census and BMD records that I have backed up with official certificates. I have learned this much so far:

John Taylor (c1860) and Mary Jane Shackleton (c1859) of Briercliffe;
parents of John William (c1883), Walter (c1884-my great granddad), Fred (c1889), Martha Jane (c1887) and Erwin (c1895).

I can only find John Taylor's mother a Grace Taylor (1838) but he did have a brother called John (c1860) Grace's parents were: John Taylor (c1796) and Grace (c1798) They had eight children, amongst them a Pickles Taylor (c1826)

John's wife, Mary Jane Shackleton's parents were a William Shackleton (c1832) of Worsthorne and Elizabeth Whitehead (c1836) They had seven children in total including a Zilpah Shackleton (b1864) who also confusingly married a John Taylor (b1857) They had a son called Hartley Taylor who is mentioned elsewhere on this site. The only parent I can find for William Shackleton is his mother Jane (c1800)

There is a family story that we are related to the great explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. I have tried to uncover anthing I can about this but to no success.

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated!

Hi
John born 1794 ,husband of Grace appears to be the son of John and Mary Taylor, birth listed on the Haggate Baptist Chapel fiche, and a couple with these names are shown as living at Holt Hill on the 1841 census, the same location as John and Grace and family

Hello all,

Thanks for all your help with this.
Gloria - not sure if these are the same family though they probably connect somewhere I am sure.
Rex - I have contacted Anne but not heard back from her yet.
Gilly - this definately looks like a possible lead, so thanks for that. Is there anyway that I can get hold of that microfiche without going all the way up to Lancashire do you think?

Well, thanks again everyone and I shall keep looking!

Issywissy, have just found your post. My Grandfather was a Shackleton, from Burnley. I will look later tonight for the connection and get back with the details ...I know we share the same families. Glenys

Hi Issy, I did reply lastnight but an electrical storm took out my router and the message got lost in the ether! Having another try now :-)

Firstly whenever I see that name Zilpah Shackleton I know it's my family..There aren't too many people called that! It's rather long winded to write here my connection to Zilpah but trust me there is one.
On the family tree I have: Mary jane Shackleton m John Taylor
Their issue: John William, Mathew, Martha jane, Fred, Walter, Irwin
Then I have Fred Taylor(above) m Sarah jane ???(no surname)
Their issue: Elizabeth Taylor and Ada Taylor
There the line ends. I would love to have your line from Walter.

I am descended from Robert Edmund Shackleton (My Grandfather)
His father John Greenwood Shackleton
John Greenwoods father Robinson Shackleton
Robinson Shackletons father Roger Shackleton

Roger Shackleton is where the link to Zilpah starts:
Rogers brother William m Jane Stanworth
Their son William Shackleton marries Elizabeth Whitehead
and one of their issue was Zilpah.

Thanks to my dearest relations in England I have the Shackletons to 1560 so I can probably help you with that line if you wish.

I think everyone who bears the name Shackleton thinks they are related to Ernest the explorer! We were told the same right from small and it was what got me started in genealogy. Ernest was Irish and as yet I haven't been able to link him to our family. We seem to have been Lancashire-ites since dot!

Please message me if you think I can be of some help. We are distantly related.

Glenys

I'm not sure when Issywissy was last on Glenys, have you tried sending a PM?
