I am trying to trace my great grandfather, John W Booth. In the 1901 census he is registered as living at Pickup Street - don't recognise that. However it also states he was born in Nuthall notts but i can;'t find any trace of his birth. Can anyone give me a hint?

Previous assistance, for which I am hugely grateful, has given me wonderful leads that have uncovered lots of ancestors.

How old is he in 1901? Can you provide the reference details for this known census please?

He is 52 - born c. 1849

1901 census Burnley East Ward District 20.

This is so addictive! Husband away today so I planned to do loads of housework but have been working on the family tree so haven't even washed a pot!

We all have those sorts of days. This is far more enjoyable than washing pots!

As I type, I am in a meeting!! Shhh, don't tell the hubby, he is the one I should be listening to right now

No, I haven't managed to place him. I'll look again. He was a black sheep - certainly drank heavily and was a bully. Perhaps he travelled round a lot. There seem to be hordes of Booths in Tottington where he was based in 1901. I wondered if John W was born in Nuthall but registered in Tottington - perhaps a moonlight flit straight after birth.

Looking on the freebmd index, he could have been registered as John as opposed to John W. There are several possible entries for John Booth.

This looks like the marriage. There is an Eliz. Bradbury living with them in 1891

Wasn't sure the census return wass for this family. John w was supposed to be born in Notts - according to 1901 census but your ref;
1891 census entry.
RG12/3499 folio 166 pg 33
gives then all as being born in Lancashire.
However, my grandmother was called Edith and had a brother, Fred. Her other sister wouldn't have been born yet.

So, I looked for his birth in Bury area of Tottington and got a village called Nuttall - in the ramsbottom area and found this:
1851 census Piece 2212, folio 86, page 6.

By the 1861 census he would appear to have become a stepson but there is no mention of a sister Susannah who presumably had died. The other siblings would probably have made their own ways by then. I never imagined his W would stand for Willich - never heard thast one before.

I must go and do some shopping now before hubby returns to a walk round the table for tea but I'll carry on tonight whilst he watches yet more football!

I have to say I always get inspiration from the Briercliffe site. I'm coming over to the area in a fortnigth to take some photos and visit graves etc.

Everything fits for this 1851 John to be your John.

It could be that John told the enumerator that he was born in Tottington, Nuttall and that the enumerator thought he said Nottingham...the two do sound similar, especially if you say it fast enough.
