Saturday November 11 1848

Guy Fawkes, and his precious associates, have long since passed from this world, and we do think the authorities should interfere, and at once put a stop to this worse than useless custom of the fifth of November. In proof of the justness of these remarks, it is our painful duty to record the following sad accident. On Saturday night last, whilst Hartley Emmett, of Haggate, aged 24, nearly Burnley, was firing off a pistol, the weapon, in it recoil, struck him violently on the stomach, and caused him to fall a distance of two or three yards. When taken up he was found to be dead, with no marks save a slight scratch on the forehead, caused by the fall. Several lesser accidents occurred, through the use of gunpowder, during the week, whilst many persons were afraid of venturing outdoors.

Hartley Emmott of Haggate, buried 7/11/1848 at Haggate Chapel.
I believe - though I can't prove it - that he was the son of Hartley Emmott/ Emmett (1786) & Ellen Catlow. There's a Hartley Emmott (b 1826) on 1841 with them and he disappears after that. So I'm sure it's the right person, just can't prove the relationship.
Hartley & Ellen's son Lawrence married Betty Leaver (b 1829) and then Margaret Ingham.
