ONE OF THE OLD VOLUNTEERS
The funeral took place in Haggate Baptist burial ground of Mr.Walton Cowgill, of 16 Myers street, Burnley, who died in the Victoria Hospital. Mr. Cowgill, who was 73 years of age, was one of the few remaining Old Volunteers. He joined the Volunteers at the age of 17, and during the Great War, although 52 years of age, he joined up and served throughout as a sergeant with the R.D.C. He was a great lover of sport, was interested in dog racing and was an enthusiastic pigeon fancier. He was an honorary member of the New Hall Club, which he had served as secretary for several years. For 57 years Mr. Cowgill had worked for Messrs. Bancroft and Co., Elm Street, Burnley. He leaves a wife, one son and two grandchildren. The Rev. R. Hurt, of Ebenezer Baptist Church conducted a service at the home and Mr. W.E. Thornber performed the last rites at the graveside.
