Awarded D.F.M.
As announced briefly in a recent, Sergt. Pilot Alan Sutcliffe, son of County Councillor and Mrs. Wilfred Sutcliffe, of Hayes, Middlesex, and late of Lower-house-lane, Burnley, has been awarded the D.F.M. Before leaving Burnley 17 years ago, Mr. Sutcliffe, senior, was an engine driver, and his wife attended Rosegrove Methodist Church. Since going to Hayes he has served on the Urban District and the County council. Sergt. Sutcliffe, who joined the R.A.F. in May, 1940, is believed to have won the D.F.M. for his part in a daylight raid on Brest last summer, when, with his gunner wounded, he brought his damaged plane back safely. Before joining up he was an official of the National Union of Railwaymen. Two uncles and aunts, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Spence and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sutcliffe, reside in Burnley, in Nairne-street and Cumberland-avenue respectively.
