BRIERCLIFFE.
CHRISTMAS GATHERINGS.- The Briercliffe Football Club on Saturday held a tea party and social in the Lane Head School, which had been tastefully decorated, the floor being covered with canvas for dancing. - The Haggate Band of Hope and Cricket Club also had on Saturday an “At Home” in the Baptist School, the guests being received by Mr. and Mrs. S. Thornton, of Burnley. A varied programme included a sketch entitled “Grumpy’s Blunder,” by eight characters. – On Saturday and Monday “At Homers” were held at Hill Lane. On Saturday the guests were received by Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Leaver, the opening ceremony being performed by Mr. Richard Nuttall, with the Rev. A. Gray in the chair. The musical portion of the programme was supplied by the Woodlands-road Baptist Choir, Nelson. Intervals were allowed for refreshments, lantern exhibitions, and photograph selections. On Monday the guests were received by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Leaver, and the programme was rendered by the chapel choir. – At Haggate the annual tea party and meeting were held on Christmas Day. The meeting was presided over by Mr. W. Stanworth, of Burnley, and addresses were given by Messers. L. Atkinson and S. Thortnton, Burnley. Choruses from the “Messiah” were sung by the choir, part songs by a juvenile choir, and Miss C. Halstead sang “Ahged Land,” Mr. W. Nuttall being the accompanist. A dialogue and recitations were also given.
