I have two clear glass old beer bottles with the name James Slater, Burnley embossed on them. I have tried searching the internet for any history but have drawn a blank. Has anyone any knowledge of an old Burnley brewery of this name please.

It may not have been a brewery. I found in the Newspaper Archive, 1924, an alcohol off-licence being transferred to a James SLATER, from Richard SLATER, deceased, at 209 Colne Rd. James may have had his own bottles, for return. Maybe filled by the brewery, or by himself from a barrell ?

The 1939 register has a James SLATER, shopkeeper and carpet dealer ! At 262/4 Colne Rd. Born 1883.

Your best bet might be a sequence of directories, Burnley Library has them.

I reside in Devon so am unable to visit the library in person for research but appreciate your help. I will persevere with online searches and hope I come up with an answer, the off-licence is a possible answer.

I have had a reply from Shirley Ashton at Burnley library who gave me more information and a link to an old photograph of Slater' Ales which is in Roger Frost's book Burnley Through Time. It would appear that the premises were situated close to the bus stop near Brennand Street.

I've attached a page from the Barretts directory of Burnley, 1893. Close to the bottom: "Slater James, ale and porter bottler, 207 and 209 Colne road."

I remember Slater's carpets. They were on the opposite side, closer to Duke Bar. Corner of Newman Street, if my memory serves me right.

Interesting. My 1890 directory has James SLATER, grocer and provision dealer, at 131 Colne Rd. The highest odd number is 151, so I guess the higher numbers built 1890-3.

Look at censuses, 1891, 1901 ?

Changing tack a bit, anyone remember Snell's paper shop, somewhere roughly opposite Brennand St ? They delivered to us on Casterton Ave, say 1950-55 at least ?

131 Colne Road must have been about Duke Bar. 207 Colne Road was probably on the corner of Brennand Street in the direction of Queensgate. The end house of the terrace that remains is 223.

My gran lived in Brennand Street. I remember the shops across from the end of her back street. There was a "co-op" grocers on the corner of Murray Street. Dowthwaites bakers, Horsefields ironmongers (double front) and a newsagents. I don't recall the name of the newsagent. That was in the 1960s though.

There was also a shop that my gran called "the dairy". It sold cooked meats and cheese, that kind of stuff. The best Lancashire cheese I ever tasted.

120 Colne Road was opposite Duke of York pub, it was a bookmakers, probably still is.

When were these taken? I worked on Colne Rd in the late 60s early 70s.

I don't know when they were taken. The book (Images of Burnley, published by Burnley Express in 1996) doesn't give dates.

My guess is that they were early 1970s.
