Dear Briercliffe Society

I have inherited a couple of nice still life paintings by a H Thornton, dated 1914. I have searched the internet and I think this H Thornton was the same H Thornton who was principal of Burnley Art School in 1950 (from a photo with him in taken that year). The paintings are a pair and are of fruits and flowers. Does anyone from that neck of the woods know any more about this person, please? My uncle lived in Wing, Bucks and I have no idea when or where he acquired the paintings.

Kind regards and thanks in anticipation.

Hi, I have Thorntons but I don't think he is one of my close ones. Burnley Library could be a good contact for any information, or they could probably point you in the right direction.

Many thanks, I'll try the library, an excellent idea.

This sounds like Harold Thornton?

Google him with Burnley attached, it may give you some info. My father studied art under someone of that name and it

rang a very faint bell

Hi, I was talking to my dad today, he reminded me that when he was at the art school in the fifties the principal was called Walter the same as my dads father (Walter Thornton) and his son was called Derek the same as my dad (Derek Thornton).

Not sure if that helps
