When finding death records, how can you be sure that the record you find, is the one you are looking for? I have found what I think is my Grandfather's record of death, but it was registered in Bolton and Lever, when I know for sure he died in Burnley. How is this possible?
The entry in question is:
James Kippax died Dec 1921 age 55 years. ref BMD 8c 446

You can sometimes tell by the name of the person who registered the death. Or was witness at death. It could be the name of the wife/son/daughter.

That might not be your Grandfathers death record, if you know for sure he died in Burnley then look for all the Burnley records, if there is more than one then that is where it gets a bit tricky, which one do you send for! It comes down to luck sometimes, on a couple of occasions I have plumped for the wrong one and wasted £7, it is trial and error until you get the correct one.

My gt grandfather was a James Kippax who died in Burnley, but not until 1966, he was born 1875. I know it isn't the same James but mine married three times and twice to ladies named Martha, so it isn't easy sorting them out. You can see my Kippax tree on the site. Not all the details I have are on there, so if you have any questions about them please ask.

Maybe the first question is how many James Kippaxs were born in 1875 +/- say 2 years.

James was a common name which ran through the Kippax family for as long as I can trace them back----at least the 1700's.

This could be the birth of the James whose death you found in Bolton. I think you can almost discount him.
James Kippax 1877 Oct-Nov-Dec Bolton Greater Manchester, Lancashire
What do you know about the date/year of birth of your James?
Do you know year/age of death?
When and who did he marry?
If we can build up a bit more of a picture we may be able to sort it out.
Sorry to fire questions at you, but the more we know the more chance we have of finding it. I would definitely say it is going to get down to sending for certs to prove it---all good fun.

hi gloria
Thanks for your interest. James was my Grandfather, born I believe in Burnley, to Robert and Susannah Kippax. According to the 1881 census, they lived at : 4 Fairbairn Street Burnley, James's birth record is I believe, Dec 1866 ref
8E 165, in Free BMD. I have his marriage certificate, dated 11 Feb 1888, his wife's name was Martha Smith, daughter of
Charles Smith who was a Tailor. So far so good. What I have not been able to find is any record of Susannah prior to the 1881 census. The census states that she was born in Lancaster. Husband Robert was a stonemason, so he may well have travelled in the course of his work. Although with all the housing under construction at that time, I can't really see the necessity. Family folklore reckon's Robert was known as : Bob 'o Ben 'o Binns's. I am inclined to think that he, or his forebears, probably came from Haggate at some stage, hence my interest.
I cannot state with any certainty, what year James died. I know he did commit suicide, by hanging, as my late uncles
Arthur and Ted (both Kippax's) found him, at his business premises in Cow Lane.
James and Martha had eight children, my Father (Robert) being the eldest, had all the paperwork to do, as a result of the suicide, and it just was not talked about at home. This, I feel explains the lack of information on my part.
Martha died not long after the birth of her eighth child, a boy, who was intellectually handicapped. I am unsure of the year of his birth, I'm waiting for the 1911 census.

Gordon,, have you tried contacting the Burnley library? Some of the Burnley Express is name indexed, and you might get lucky and find the article on James’s suicide.

You could also try the Burnley Cemetery (bereavementservices@burnley.gov.uk). They can provide a list of all the Kippax burials.

Could this be her?

1851 living on Boot St as a son-in-law. On the actual census I think it says Nutter not Natter. Robert is a mason. Mary Nutter is a widow. So we can presume Ann's maiden name is Nutter----welcome to the Nutters

Ann Kippax 19
Robert Kippax 22
Amelia Natter 2
Jane Natter 16
Mary Natter 44
Mary Natter 9
Thomas Natter 11
